Recreation Therapy

Recreation Therapy

Recreational therapy, also known as therapeutic recreation, is a systematic process that utilizes recreation and other activity-based interventions to address the assessed needs of individuals with illnesses and/or disabling conditions, as a means to psychological and physical health, recovery and well-being. Recreation Therapy uses treatment, education, and recreation services to help people with illness, disabilities, and other conditions to develop and use their leisure in ways that enhance their health, functional abilities, independence, and quality of life (NTRS 2000).

At Community Health and Wellness, LLC, we contract with Recreation Therapists to provide home and community based therapeutic programming to meet the needs of our clients. Our therapists work with individuals to provide leisure education, which includes teaching leisure awareness and leisure skills and offering recreational opportunities within the local community.

Therapeutic Recreation Activities and Outings

Therapists tailor programs to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities; therefore, each Recreational Therapy program looks different. Therapeutic Activities may include but are not limited to the following: arts and crafts, scrap-booking, computer skills, team sports, card games, board games, music activities, cooking/baking, and puzzles. In addition, clients may participate in therapeutic outings, including but not limited to the following: movies, bowling, laser tag, community festivals, concerts, zoo, parks, garden center, department stores, and sporting events. Clients with specific interests are encouraged to share those with their therapists.
